Get your own land
As we observe what’s going on we see People moving out of large urban areas. This isn’t a minor trend. After the experience of being locked down in your own home as if it was a premium jail many People do not want to risk it again in a context where we are told that there will be new pandemics.
We observe People moving to rural areas and secure house and land there. Some folks will use these as back-up options in case they need it.
The goal of this page is for you to be aware of this option and to direct you to organizations and People who can support your need.
Overview of this option
As we have talked and seen multiple People exploring and executing on this idea of getting a piece of land we think there are a few things you should know.
Do you want this to be your plan A or plan B?
That makes a difference. You won’t think in the same manner if it is your plan A or your plan B.
If it’s your plan A, you are going to put a significant amount of resources in it, be it time, money or effort. You also will be more careful and picky about the location you select. We do invite you to browse the “Move somewhere else” section on Peoplelyzer to access resources that should guide your selection.
If it’s a plan B don’t expect to spend as much time on it as if it was a plan A. The location may actually be way closer than if it was a plan A. Pay attention to the risk of not being able to reach your plan B. Make sure you will be allowed to reach the location of plan B if shit hits the fan (lockdown are in place). It likely means that you are citizen in this location B or part of your family is there or you have a rental contract there or own a property or have a company registered there. Whatever will support your move if you are confronted with regulation.
Seeking autonomy
The commonality of the folks seeking to get their own land is autonomy. These People seek to increase their level of autonomy. It’s no surprise that may of them come from urban areas where they live in a flat or a house with a very small garden. Many of them are single or a couple without kids.
Where to get a piece of land?
Anywhere you fancy i would say but you may want to factor in:
Most People opt for locations where they will be better treated. You may opt for moving out of Paris and settle in the Ardèche but will you be treated in the same way by local authorities? Will local schools harass your children?
Check the place first if this is doable. Avoid any financial commitment before checking the place.
Is any of the places you went on holidays a good option?
We have seen folks moving to places that they were familiar with. Just factor in that you are potentially live there full time. Holidays may be great there but do you see yourself living there full time or even experiencing movement restriction in this location?
Don’t invest everything you own
From what we have seen it’s often not a good idea to invest most of what you own in this new location. Try to spend a low amount of cash at first and see how it goes. It means that if you buy a land don’t opt for spending all what you own. After being in this new location for a while you are better informed and that will help you to access better deals.
Manage your expectations
If you think that you can copy paste your current life and property to the new location you will get into troubles. It’s the wrong mindset. You are potentially up for a lot of changes and it’s better to embrace this change. The “Mindsets” section of “Move somewhere else” is covering some of the mindsets that will support you in moving.

Green-ValôM by Ubuntu
Acheterre is a tool created by a French guy. The idea is to facilitate your purchase of land, either individually or as a group of a few individuals. Usually, real estate agency are not knowledgeable about land purchase but Acheterre is.
Land will be purchased at a relatively low price (around EUR 1 per square meter). If you want to connect with this group please contact them by Telegram: https://t.me/Acheterre. The interface is in French but you can use Telegram’s translate function.
Achetter offers 2 propositions:
“Keeper of life”. The idea is to give you an opportunity to learn to be more autonomous. Someone who own a land will let you settle on his land and learn how to be autonomous. In exchange you will keep his property and commit to a number of hours a week when you will maintain the property. The owner will “assess” your ability to be autonomous.
You directly buy a piece of land form a few hundred euros to thousands of euros. Acheterre is offering to try the location first to make sure it’s in line with your expectations. Then you can make a decision on purchasing or not.
Ecolieu
In France, you may hear about “ecolieu”. Don’t be surprised, French are expert at inventing new concepts (or simply re-inventing old concepts). Ecolieu sounds good but they come with a price tag as well as regulation.
